It was a frigid and moonless night on the Atlantic Ocean during one of the worst storms of the century and Ian McGuinness found himself Captain of the USS Francis. With a fire on deck and several mechanical failures, McGuinness was forced to take whatever means necessary to save his crew of roughly six hundred men. Most of the lifeboats had been damaged by mammoth size waves and the majority of his crew were either injured or thrown overboard. After the grueling seventeen hour battle, McGuinness awoke in a daze with a minor head injury from being tossed across the control room. He found himself surrounded by Five Naval Officers, the only remaining survivors. There was Thomas James Dumser, Brendan Patrick Coughlan, Eric Stuart Tait Jr, Ryan Oliver Sniffen, and Miles Nasta.
